The Main Causes of Hair Thinning

What the Research on Nettle and Plant-Based DHT Blockers Shows

Stinging nettle root is commonly marketed as a natural DHT blocker. The mechanism is real at a laboratory level: nettle root extract has been shown in vitro to interfere with 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT.

What is missing is confirmation in human hair-loss trials. These findings come from test-tube and preclinical studies, not controlled trials in people with androgenetic alopecia. Several independent reviews of the evidence also point out that the specific claim of nettle “improving scalp circulation” has no real supporting data, even though it is a common marketing line.

None of this means nettle is useless — it means it belongs in the “promising, still unproven in humans” category, not the “clinically confirmed” one.

What Has Stronger Evidence Behind It

For genetic hair loss specifically, minoxidil (topical, over the counter) and finasteride (prescription, blocks DHT production directly) have the strongest clinical trial support of any widely available option. For shedding tied to nutrition, correcting an actual deficiency — confirmed with bloodwork rather than guessed at — tends to help more than any topical product. For scalp irritation or buildup, gentle, consistent scalp care matters regardless of which active ingredients you use.
